GTSC ANNUAL FAMILY FUN DAY/REGATTA
Yesterday, Sunday 13th September, saw the annual GTSC Family Fun Day and Regatta, with a fantastic programme of races designed to suit sailors of all ages and abilities.
We started the day with Senior Moments, a race for our young-at-heart sailors, who competed alongside our younger sailors, including youths and juniors.
This was followed by the Novices’ Race, aimed at sailors who have yet to win a trophy, giving them the opportunity to compete for some well-deserved silverware.
We then held the Archie Ferguson Memorial Trophy, a race for our youngsters in memory of former Club President Archie Ferguson.
After a busy morning on the water, we stopped for lunch and took full advantage of the BBQ and tea bar. There was also a plentiful supply of cakes and other “healthy” tasty morsels — just what was needed to provide the energy for an afternoon of continued racing!
The afternoon programme began with Bart’s Bash, where we joined sailors around the world in racing to raise funds for the Andrew Simpson Foundation (ASF). GTSC works closely with the ASF to provide training courses, so it was particularly appropriate that we took part in this important event.
Seven boats took part in Bart’s Bash, helping to support this worthwhile cause.
The second race of the afternoon was the JMS Challenge — a fun event combining sailing, stand-up paddleboards and kayaks, using the club’s own craft.
The event is a nod to our former — and certainly not forgotten — Commodore, James Middleton Stewart, who was at the forefront of bringing club boats to GTSC for members to use free of charge. In recent years, we have expanded the range of club craft available to members to include SUPs and kayaks.
The final race of the day was the Parent/Offspring Race, with three boats taking part. The offspring — or, in some cases, “adopted” offspring — took the helm, while the parents provided some useful advice and encouragement from the crew positions!
It was a great day of sailing, competition and, most importantly, fun, with something for everyone to enjoy.
I have also provided a list of the day’s racing results. The winners will receive their trophies and silverware at our Prize Giving and Awards Ceremony in November.
A big thank you to everyone who took part, helped organise the event, supported the racing, provided food and refreshments, or simply came along to enjoy the day.
